A New Quest

Beginnings are all around us. Every day we wake up to a new day. At work we have a series of meetings, events and choices, each a chance to begin anew.

Today, like most days, I’m beginning again. This time I begin a new Quest. This is a personal Quest toward the horizon.

Inspired by the article “Choose Good Quests" by Trae Stephens and Markie Wagner, I and choosing to embark on such a Good Quest.

My Good Quest

I began my life as a Civil Engineer because I aspired to both build great things and have those creations serve the world in an improved way. I pursued a career in Civil Engineering in a long lineage of service. I am the son of a Civil Engineer and a Teacher, the grandson of a Manufacturing Quality Manager, a Cooperative Extension Agricultural Educator, and two wonderful grandmothers who were dedicated community members supporting schools, churches and community organizations throughout Iowa and around the world.

Service and the desire to build the infrastructure of civilization is in my blood.

As a kid I played any game that I could get my hands on. Chess, soccer, baseball, basketball. I once joined a water polo team because I was in the pool rehabbing my knee at the same time as their morning practice and I thought it would be fun to play with the ball while I recover.

Today, I’ll still play virtually any game where I’m invited. Once joining a tennis league after winning a ping pong tournament at a Halloween party. I went on to win a 3.0 WTT National Championship as a result of that happy encounter. Please keep in mind, I’m not great at sports. I am good enough to have fun and be competitive at the same time.

Competitive play is how I engage and learn

Today, I am choosing to merge these two perspectives of Service and Play into a new perspective for my life and emerging career.

I look forward to sharing this journey with you.
